Shangkhaprachhyalan

Shangkhaprachhyalan

Shankhaprakshalana (also known as Varisara Dhauti) is a yogic detoxification technique that cleanses the entire digestive system, from the mouth to the anus. The name is derived from Sanskrit, where “Shankha” means conch (symbolizing the intestines), and “Prakshalana” means cleansing. This practice is highly effective for detoxifying the body, improving digestion, and rejuvenating overall health.

How Shankhaprakshalana Works

The practice involves drinking warm saline water, performing specific yoga postures to move the water through the digestive tract, and eventually expelling it through bowel movements. It is considered one of the most thorough cleansing techniques in yoga, promoting a healthy digestive system and balanced energy.

Steps to Perform Shankhaprakshalana

  1. Preparation:
    • Choose a calm day when you have no other commitments, as the process can take several hours.
    • Use warm saline water (add 1 teaspoon of salt to 1 liter of water) to match the body’s salinity, preventing absorption into the bloodstream.
    • Perform the practice early in the morning on an empty stomach.
  2. Drinking Saline Water:
    • Drink about 2 glasses (approximately 500 ml) of warm saline water.
  3. Yoga Poses: Perform the following yoga asanas in sequence to help the water move through the digestive tract:
    • Tadasana (Palm Tree Pose): Stretches the abdomen and opens the passage for water to move down.
    • Tiryaka Tadasana (Swaying Palm Tree Pose): Aids in water flow through the stomach and intestines.
    • Kati Chakrasana (Waist Rotating Pose): Twists the abdomen, pushing the water through the intestines.
    • Tiryaka Bhujangasana (Twisting Cobra Pose): Stimulates intestinal movement.
    • Udarakarshanasana (Abdominal Stretch Pose): Promotes the downward movement of water.
  4. Elimination:
    • After repeating the cycle of drinking and performing poses, you will feel the urge to pass stool. Expel the water naturally.
    • Continue the process of drinking water, performing poses, and eliminating until the water expelled is clear.
  5. Post-Cleansing Meal:
    • Eat a light meal (typically khichdi made with rice and lentils) a few hours after completing the practice to stabilize the digestive system.
    • Avoid spicy, oily, or processed foods for the next 24 hours.
